What is Barium Meal Follow Through (BMFT)?
An X-Ray study of the small bowel. You drink a barium liquid and films are taken at intervals over a few hours as it travels the full length of the small intestine.
When is this test advised?
Requested when a hollow organ or passage has to be seen from the inside — its outline, whether it is narrowed or blocked, and whether anything leaks where it should not. Your doctor decides whether this specific study is right for you.
What does it evaluate?
The shape, calibre and drainage of the passage being studied, and how freely the contrast moves through it.

How to prepare
Do not eat or drink anything from midnight — the stomach must be completely empty, and even a cup of tea can spoil the study. Avoid smoking and chewing gum on the morning of the test as well, since both increase stomach secretions. X-Rays use a small dose of radiation, so tell our team before the exposure if you are pregnant or think you might be. A follow-through study takes several hours because films are taken as the barium travels, so keep the day free. Drink plenty of water afterwards; your stools will look pale for a day or two. Please bring your prescription and any previous films or reports of the same area.
