What is BMD Test (DEXA Bone Density Scan)?
A DEXA scan of the bone. Two very low-dose X-ray beams are passed through the site being measured and the difference in how each is absorbed gives the mineral content of the bone. You lie still on an open table — nothing encloses you — and the result comes as a T-score and Z-score compared against reference ranges.
When is this test advised?
Commonly requested to check for osteoporosis or thinning bone — after the menopause, after a fracture from a minor fall, with long-term steroid use, or to see whether treatment already started is working. Your doctor decides whether this specific study is right for you.
What does it evaluate?
Mineral density at the lumbar spine, hip and forearm, reported as T-score and Z-score against reference ranges, alongside your own earlier readings where available.

How to prepare
Wear loose clothing with no metal on it — no zips, hooks, buttons, belts or an underwired bra — and leave jewellery at home, because anything metal in the field changes the reading. The dose is a small fraction of an ordinary X-Ray, but the scan is not done in pregnancy, so tell our team if you are pregnant or think you might be. Do not take a calcium supplement on the day of the scan, and tell us if you have had a barium study, a CT scan with contrast, or a nuclear medicine scan in the last seven days — any of these can sit in the field and make the result unreliable, so the appointment may need to be moved. Please bring every previous bone density report you have. A single reading says less than the change between two, and the comparison is most reliable when both scans were done on the same machine — so tell us where the earlier one was done.
