What is DEXA Body Composition Scan?
A whole-body DEXA scan read for composition rather than for bone alone. The same two-beam measurement separates fat, lean tissue and bone mineral, and reports them for each region of the body as well as in total — including where fat is distributed, which a weighing scale or a BMI figure cannot show.
When is this test advised?
Requested to measure body fat, lean muscle mass and their distribution accurately — while training, while managing weight, or to follow a change over time rather than a single figure on a scale. It is a measurement, not a diagnosis.
What does it evaluate?
Total and regional fat mass, lean mass and bone mineral content, the distribution of fat between the trunk and the limbs, and the change from your own previous scans.

How to prepare
Come in the same state each time you have this done, because the value of a body composition scan is in the comparison. A light meal is fine — avoid a heavy one in the two hours before — and drink normally rather than loading up or restricting water. Skip heavy training on the morning of the scan. Wear loose clothing with no metal on it — no zips, hooks, buttons, belts or an underwired bra — and leave jewellery at home, because anything metal in the field changes the reading. The dose is a small fraction of an ordinary X-Ray, but the scan is not done in pregnancy, so tell our team if you are pregnant or think you might be. Do not take a calcium supplement on the day of the scan, and tell us if you have had a barium study, a CT scan with contrast, or a nuclear medicine scan in the last seven days — any of these can sit in the field and make the result unreliable, so the appointment may need to be moved.
