What is CBCT Dental Scan (Cone Beam CT)?
A 3D scan of the teeth and jaw. A cone-shaped X-ray beam sweeps once around your head while you sit still, and the images are reconstructed into a volume your dentist can slice through in any direction — so bone height, root position and the nerve canal can be measured rather than estimated from a flat film. The dose is a small fraction of a medical CT.
When is this test advised?
Commonly requested before a dental implant, a difficult extraction or a wisdom tooth, for a root canal that has not settled, to locate an impacted tooth before orthodontic treatment, and to assess jaw joint pain or a swelling in the jaw. Your doctor decides whether this specific study is right for you.
What does it evaluate?
Tooth roots and root canals, bone height and width at implant sites, the position of the inferior alveolar nerve and the maxillary sinus floor, impacted and unerupted teeth, cysts and lesions in the jaw, and the jaw joints.

How to prepare
No fasting is needed and you can eat and take your medicines normally. Remove everything metal from the head and neck before the scan — earrings, nose pin, chain, hairpins, spectacles, hearing aids — and take out any removable denture, retainer or orthodontic plate. Fixed braces, crowns and implants cannot be removed and are not a problem; just tell the technician they are there. The scan itself is over in well under a minute, but you have to stay completely still for it, because a small movement blurs the whole 3D volume rather than one part of it. A CBCT uses a low dose of X-rays, so tell our team if you are pregnant or think you might be. Please bring your dentist's prescription and, if you can, what it is being taken for — an implant, a root canal, an impacted tooth, the jaw joint. The area we scan is set from that before you are positioned.
