What is CBCT Maxillary Sinus Scan?
A 3D scan of the maxillary sinuses — the air spaces in the cheekbones, directly above the upper back teeth. The cone beam sweep shows the sinus lining, the floor of the sinus and its drainage opening in three dimensions, at a much lower dose than a medical CT of the sinuses.
When is this test advised?
Commonly requested for long-standing or one-sided sinus symptoms, to check whether a sinus problem is coming from an upper tooth, and before a sinus lift or an implant in the upper back jaw. Your doctor decides whether this specific study is right for you.
What does it evaluate?
Thickening of the sinus lining, fluid or a retention cyst, the height of bone below the sinus floor, the drainage opening, and the relationship between the sinus floor and the roots of the upper teeth.

How to prepare
No fasting is needed and you can eat and take your medicines normally. Remove everything metal from the head and neck before the scan — earrings, nose pin, chain, hairpins, spectacles, hearing aids — and take out any removable denture, retainer or orthodontic plate. Fixed braces, crowns and implants cannot be removed and are not a problem; just tell the technician they are there. The scan itself is over in well under a minute, but you have to stay completely still for it, because a small movement blurs the whole 3D volume rather than one part of it. A CBCT uses a low dose of X-rays, so tell our team if you are pregnant or think you might be. Please bring your dentist's prescription and, if you can, what it is being taken for — an implant, a root canal, an impacted tooth, the jaw joint. The area we scan is set from that before you are positioned.
