What is CBCT TMJ Scan (Jaw Joint)?
A 3D scan of the temporomandibular joints — where the lower jaw meets the skull. The cone beam sweep is reconstructed into a volume so the joint surfaces, the position of the condyle in its socket and the space between them can be seen from every angle, which a flat film cannot show.
When is this test advised?
Commonly requested for jaw pain, clicking or grating on opening, a jaw that locks or deviates to one side, limited mouth opening, or before orthodontic or jaw surgery planning. Your doctor decides whether this specific study is right for you.
What does it evaluate?
The shape and surface of both condyles, the joint space, any flattening, erosion or bony overgrowth, and how the two sides compare with each other.

How to prepare
No fasting is needed and you can eat and take your medicines normally. Remove everything metal from the head and neck before the scan — earrings, nose pin, chain, hairpins, spectacles, hearing aids — and take out any removable denture, retainer or orthodontic plate. Fixed braces, crowns and implants cannot be removed and are not a problem; just tell the technician they are there. The scan itself is over in well under a minute, but you have to stay completely still for it, because a small movement blurs the whole 3D volume rather than one part of it. A CBCT uses a low dose of X-rays, so tell our team if you are pregnant or think you might be. Please bring your dentist's prescription and, if you can, what it is being taken for — an implant, a root canal, an impacted tooth, the jaw joint. The area we scan is set from that before you are positioned.
