What is Abdominal & Liver Doppler?
A Colour Doppler study of the vessels inside the abdomen — the portal vein, hepatic veins, the inferior vena cava and the main arteries. Both the direction of flow and its waveform are recorded, which is how raised pressure in the portal system is recognised.
When is this test advised?
Commonly requested in chronic liver disease and suspected portal hypertension, for abdominal swelling with fluid, before and after liver-related surgery or a shunt, and to look for clot in the portal or hepatic veins. Your doctor decides whether this specific study is right for you.
What does it evaluate?
Direction and speed of portal flow and whether it has reversed, portal vein diameter, clot within the portal or hepatic veins, collateral vessels, the inferior vena cava, and flow in the main abdominal arteries.

How to prepare
Do not eat for 6 hours before the study; plain water is allowed and is helpful. An empty stomach reduces gas in the bowel, which is what lets the probe see the deep vessels at all — a gassy abdomen is the usual reason an abdominal Doppler has to be repeated. Avoid fizzy drinks and, if you are prone to gas, ask your doctor whether to take a simethicone tablet the night before. Colour Doppler uses sound waves, not radiation. Please bring your prescription and any previous scans or reports of the same area.
