What is Renal Doppler?
A Colour Doppler study of the kidneys and their blood supply. The main renal arteries and the small vessels inside the kidney are sampled, and the resistance to flow within the kidney is measured alongside the picture of the kidney itself.
When is this test advised?
Commonly requested for high blood pressure that is difficult to control or started young, for declining kidney function, and — for a transplanted kidney — to check the graft and its vessels are working as they should. Your doctor decides whether this specific study is right for you.
What does it evaluate?
Flow in the main renal arteries and any narrowing at their origin, resistive index within the kidney, kidney size and cortical thickness, and, in a transplant, the graft vessels and any collection around it.

How to prepare
Do not eat for 6 hours before the study; plain water is allowed and is helpful. An empty stomach reduces gas in the bowel, which is what lets the probe see the deep vessels at all — a gassy abdomen is the usual reason an abdominal Doppler has to be repeated. Colour Doppler uses sound waves, not radiation. Please bring your prescription and any previous scans or reports of the same area. If this is for a transplanted kidney, bring your transplant records and previous Doppler reports so the values can be compared.
