What is Varicose Vein Doppler & Marking?
A Colour Doppler study of the leg veins done while you stand, followed by marking the skin. Standing is the point — valve leakage only shows when the vein is under the weight of the blood above it. The incompetent segments and the perforator points are then drawn on the skin for the surgeon.
When is this test advised?
Commonly requested for visible varicose veins, aching or heaviness in the legs at the end of the day, ankle swelling, skin darkening around the ankle or a venous ulcer — and routinely before varicose vein surgery or laser treatment. Your doctor decides whether this specific study is right for you.
What does it evaluate?
Which valves are leaking and where, the sapheno-femoral and sapheno-popliteal junctions, incompetent perforators and their exact position on the skin, the diameter of the affected veins, and whether the deep veins are open.

How to prepare
Colour Doppler uses sound waves, not radiation. No fasting, no full bladder and no injection are needed, and you can continue your regular medicines as usual. Most of this study is done standing, so allow for that and wear or bring shorts. If the marking is being done before an operation, book it close to the surgery date and do not scrub the skin marks off — they are what the surgeon works from. Please bring your prescription and any previous scans or reports of the same area.
