What is Limb Doppler (Arterial & Venous)?
A Colour Doppler study of the arteries and veins of an arm or leg. The probe follows each vessel along its length, and the colour and waveform on screen show which way the blood is moving and how fast — so a narrowing, a blockage or a clot is seen as a change in flow, not just as a shadow.
When is this test advised?
Commonly requested for swelling or pain in one leg where a clot (deep vein thrombosis) has to be ruled out, for cramping calf pain on walking that settles with rest, for a cold or discoloured foot, for a non-healing ulcer, and to follow up a bypass or a stent. Your doctor decides whether this specific study is right for you.
What does it evaluate?
Arterial flow along the limb and the level of any narrowing or blockage, whether the deep and superficial veins compress normally, the presence and extent of clot, and reflux at the valve sites.

How to prepare
Colour Doppler uses sound waves, not radiation. No fasting, no full bladder and no injection are needed, and you can continue your regular medicines as usual. Wear or bring loose clothing that lets the whole limb be uncovered — the vessel is followed from the top of the limb to the foot or hand, so a trouser leg that will not roll up high enough is the commonest hold-up. Allow extra time if both sides are being studied. Please bring your prescription and any previous scans or reports of the same area.
