What is AV Fistula Doppler (Dialysis Access)?
A Colour Doppler study of the arm vessels for dialysis access. Before surgery it maps which artery and vein are suitable and marks them on the skin; afterwards it measures how well the fistula is flowing and looks for the narrowing that causes a fistula to fail.
When is this test advised?
Requested before a fistula is created, to choose the site; and afterwards when a fistula is slow to mature, when dialysis pressures are rising, when the arm swells, or when the thrill over the fistula has changed. Your doctor decides whether this specific study is right for you.
What does it evaluate?
Diameter and depth of the target vein and whether it is free of scarring, arterial inflow and its waveform, and — for an existing fistula — volume flow, narrowing at the anastomosis or in the outflow vein, clot, and any aneurysm.

How to prepare
Colour Doppler uses sound waves, not radiation. No fasting, no full bladder and no injection are needed, and you can continue your regular medicines as usual. Wear a short-sleeved or loose-sleeved top so the whole arm is accessible, and keep the arm warm on the way in — a cold arm tightens the veins and makes them look smaller than they really are, which matters when the map is being drawn. Do not let anyone take blood or put a blood pressure cuff on that arm beforehand. If you are on dialysis, tell us your schedule so the study can be timed sensibly around it, and bring your access history. Please bring your prescription and any previous scans or reports of the same area.
