What is Obstetric Doppler (Fetal Wellbeing)?
A Colour Doppler study done in pregnancy to check how well the placenta is supplying the baby. Flow is measured in the umbilical artery, the vessel in the baby's brain and the mother's uterine arteries, and the readings are compared against the expected range for the stage of pregnancy.
When is this test advised?
Commonly requested when the baby is measuring small or growth has slowed, in high blood pressure or pre-eclampsia, in diabetes in pregnancy, when the fluid around the baby is low, in a twin or triplet pregnancy, and whenever the treating doctor wants to follow wellbeing closely towards term. Your doctor decides whether this specific study is right for you.
What does it evaluate?
Umbilical artery flow and its resistance, middle cerebral artery flow and the ratio between the two, uterine artery waveform, the fluid around the baby, and estimated fetal weight against the expected range.

How to prepare
Colour Doppler uses sound waves, not radiation. It is safe in pregnancy and no fasting, no full bladder and no injection are needed. Wear loose two-piece clothing so the abdomen is easy to reach, and eat normally before you come — a baby that is awake and moving is easier to study. Carry your antenatal card and all previous scans, since the value of this study is in the trend rather than one reading. As required by law, the sex of the fetus is never determined or disclosed (PCPNDT Act, 1994).
