What is Scrotal Doppler?
A Colour Doppler study of the testes and the vessels around them. Because it shows blood flow rather than only structure, it can tell a testis with a normal blood supply from one whose supply has been cut off — which is why it is the urgent test in sudden testicular pain.
When is this test advised?
Commonly requested for sudden or severe testicular pain where twisting (torsion) has to be excluded urgently, for a swelling or lump, for a dragging ache with visible veins (varicocele), after an injury, and as part of an infertility work-up. Your doctor decides whether this specific study is right for you.
What does it evaluate?
Blood flow within each testis and how the two sides compare, twisting of the cord, dilated veins of the pampiniform plexus and whether they enlarge on straining, fluid around the testis, and any lump within it.

How to prepare
Colour Doppler uses sound waves, not radiation. No fasting, no full bladder and no injection are needed, and you can continue your regular medicines as usual. A chaperone can be present throughout if you would prefer — tell our team when booking. Please bring your prescription and any previous scans or reports of the same area. If the pain started suddenly and is severe, do not wait for an appointment; go to a hospital and tell them, because torsion is time-critical.
