What is Bone Age X-Ray (Hand & Wrist)?
A single X-Ray of the left hand and wrist. The growth centres in the small bones appear and fuse in a known order, so the film is compared against a standard atlas to give a skeletal age — which can differ from the age on the birth certificate.
When is this test advised?
Commonly requested when a child seems much shorter or taller than their peers, in delayed or early puberty, and by orthodontists deciding when to begin treatment — because the right moment depends on how much growth is left, not on the calendar. Your doctor decides whether this specific study is right for you.
What does it evaluate?
The growth centres present in the hand and wrist and how far each has fused, the skeletal age this corresponds to, and the difference between that and the child's actual age.

How to prepare
No preparation is needed and there is no fasting. Remove rings, bangles and a watch from the hand being filmed, and wear a short or loose sleeve so the wrist is uncovered. The exposure is over in a moment; the hand simply rests flat on the plate. X-Rays use a small dose of radiation, so tell our team if you are pregnant or think you might be. Please bring the referring dentist's or doctor's prescription, and any earlier films, since this study is usually read as a comparison over time.
