What is OPG TMJ X-Ray (Jaw Joint)?
A panoramic X-Ray taken with the arm set to image the temporomandibular joints — usually with the mouth closed and again with it open, so both joints can be compared side by side on one film.
When is this test advised?
Commonly requested for jaw pain, clicking or grating when opening, a jaw that locks or shifts to one side, and limited mouth opening. It is the first-line film; a CBCT is used when the bone surfaces need to be seen in three dimensions. Your doctor decides whether this specific study is right for you.
What does it evaluate?
The outline of both condyles, how far each moves between the closed and open positions, obvious flattening or irregularity of the joint surface, and how the two sides compare with each other.

How to prepare
No fasting is needed. Remove everything metal from the head and neck before the exposure — earrings, nose pin, chain, hairpins, spectacles, hearing aids — and take out any removable denture, retainer or orthodontic plate. Fixed braces, crowns and implants cannot be removed and are not a problem; just tell the technician they are there. This matters more than on an ordinary dental film because the machine travels around your head while the picture is being taken, so a single earring smears a ghost right across the jaw and the film has to be repeated. The dose is lower than a full set of small dental films, but tell our team if you are pregnant or think you might be. You will stand and bite gently on a small plastic guide while the arm rotates around you, which takes about twenty seconds; staying still for that is the whole job. Please bring your dentist's prescription and any earlier films.
