What is Cephalometric X-Ray (Lateral & PA Ceph)?
A standardised side-on or front-on X-Ray of the head, taken with the head held in a fixed holder so that every film is made from exactly the same angle. That repeatability is the point: it is what lets an orthodontist or surgeon measure the jaws and teeth against each other, and measure the change between one film and the next.
When is this test advised?
Commonly requested at the start of orthodontic treatment and again to check progress, and in planning jaw surgery — to measure how the upper and lower jaws sit relative to each other and to the base of the skull. Your doctor decides whether this specific study is right for you.
What does it evaluate?
The relationship of the upper and lower jaws to each other and to the skull base, the angle and position of the front teeth, facial proportions and soft tissue profile, and the change from your earlier films.

How to prepare
No fasting is needed. Remove everything metal from the head and neck before the exposure — earrings, nose pin, chain, hairpins, spectacles, hearing aids — and take out any removable denture, retainer or orthodontic plate. Fixed braces, crowns and implants cannot be removed and are not a problem; just tell the technician they are there. This matters more than on an ordinary dental film because the machine travels around your head while the picture is being taken, so a single earring smears a ghost right across the jaw and the film has to be repeated. The dose is lower than a full set of small dental films, but tell our team if you are pregnant or think you might be. Your head is held in a fixed holder with small supports at the ears so that every ceph is taken from exactly the same angle — that is what lets your orthodontist measure the change between one film and the next. Stand or sit still and keep your teeth together in your normal bite unless you are told otherwise. Please bring your orthodontist's prescription and any earlier ceph films.
